Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley
The birth of DuVernay's daughter took place on the 24th day of August 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative talents as a child because of her Aunt Denise. Aunt Denise was a nurse who did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her day to literature, theatre, and art. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective way to spread activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially mindful by her mother. DuVernay was brought up in Compton with her parents but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has lived for many generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summer months and was inspired to create a film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to look at the trash of a jury member's home. She was disappointed by her journalism tasks and decided to move into the world of public relations. DuVernay was offered a job straight after college as a young publicist for a studio. The year 1999 was the time she launched her own company of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Besides PR, the agency established several lifestyle platforms including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
